Women of the West

In the American West, art has long come from women’s hands: blankets woven for children, pottery shaped and fired at the pueblos, paintings, prints, colcha embroidery, jewelry.

Many of those hands were unrecorded, others were named — O’Keeffe, Peña, Kloss, Martin, Cordero, Bird, Lynch. Still others were painted: a pottery girl, Julianita at San Ildefonso, Emily in a red cloche.

The works gathered here begin with an olla shaped at Zia around 1880 and end with a pastel finished in Santa Fe this year. Together they make a long record of the West, with women at its center.

Women of the West will be on view across both galleries — at The Owings Gallery on Marcy Street and at The Owings Gallery on Palace Avenue — from July 17 to August 22, 2026.

The Marcy gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Palace gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to p.m., Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and by appointment only on Monday and Tuesday. For inquiries call (505) 982-6244 or email info@owingsgallery.com.
