(1901-1958)
Alfred Morang spent his childhood in Maine, learning to paint from the various artists who summered near his home. He later studied at Fremond University under Caroll Tyson and Henry Snell. Morang's early career was marked by an artistic restlessness that drove him to create in many medias. While living in Boston in the 1920's, Morang studied art and music, illustrated books and magazines, and began to work on a number of works of fiction, some of which would be published in the 1930's. In 1938 he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and focused primarily on painting. Along with Raymond Johnson, Emil Bisttram and William Lumkins, Morang founded the Transcendental Painting Group, which strived to paint what could not be rendered visually.
